Hi, I was hoping that someone would be able to point me to where there are some West Indian folks and culture. I know nothing of Raleigh so pardon me if I sound silly.
That's a great question, and I'm not sure I have a great answer. I am Haitian and Trinidadian, and I teach Zumba, and have found that Erica Dixon, a local Zumba instructor, is super in touch with the West Indian community, hosts some Caribbean themed classes, and is super involved with the Caribbean festival which happens around August here. I also do some salsa dancing, and usually there is some Zouk or Kizomba included as well. The aPasionata group is a great place to start.
I am a Trini, living in CA and is planning to relocate to the Raleigh area, however, I was hoping to be in place where I can find some Caribbean culture. I do not know anyone there but I am working with relator who showed me some homes in Clayton and Garner. I will be coming to check out the areas and the traffic but I always love to hear what others have to say about the area. What area do you live and do you like it? have you been there very long? Appreciate any advice.
There is a large population of Indian folks in Morrisville, but not particularly West Indian/Caribbean. There definitely are some island folks around, but I'm not sure if they're in a particular area or not. There are a few Jamaican restaurants, but I think your best answer may be from Caarmour above.
Yeah, that's why I deleted my comment, when I realized West Indian is evidently not the same as what most people think of as Indian. At least I don't think.
