Hi,
We have two healthy rescue dogs and had a great low cost vet in Florida that offered low prices vaccines and surgeries.
When we moved here I took one of my dogs to the local vet for his rabies vaccine I was also needing some heart worm meds.
Well needless to say, they wanted to do every test under the sun and not just do what I went in for.
We just rescued another dog and I need to get her some heartworm meds.
I have all of her paperwork from her check up in May when they checked her for everything, got all of her shots up to date and spayed her. The local vet will not give me heart worm meds until they check her even though I have all of the documentation from the check up in May.
It is so frustrating! I am looking for a vet that will just do what needs to be done and not want to rip you off.
Can anyone recommend a good vet in the area?

A good friend of mine uses Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital and sings their praises over both services and price. Unfortunately I will never be allowed to experience this first hand because my wife thinks Bowman walks on water and so we're married to their practice (granted they did save one of our cats when no one else could).

Thanks. Bowmans the one I spent a fortune at and also the one that wants to redo a test done in May. I do think it is possible to be low cost and caring, compassionate & knowledgable. Our vet in FL was all of those things.

Where are you again? Our vet has proven to be very reasonable. We've been there twice for emergencies and it was $50 for the visit. They gave us a " new patient discount" first time we went. And we really like the doc to boot. But its in Cary.

Bowman is for the rich northeners who like high end red carpet treatment

Go to Magnolia on Capital, and I recommend Dr. John there.

Our dog just had knee surgery there, $600 out the door everyone else wanted $3k-$4k.

FYI you can buy heartworm meds online from out of the country with no prescription required. Much cheaper than buying via the vet.

HOWEVER, most vets will not prescribe heartworm meds without a recent test if the dog has been off of them. That isn't limited to Bowman. Rabies can be done locally at clinics for $5 for a 3-year shot.

It's not a Northerner thing, it's just a thing.

Try Fisher Veterinary Hospital on Gresham Lake Rd. Dr. Joel is the real deal and your wallet never feels exploited after you leave. We found him on day 3 after our move to Raleigh and we're so glad we did!

I will second Bayleaf. I've had my cat there twice in the past couple of months. On the last visit they only charged me for the meds that I bought and not the visit or the bath they had to give my kitty.
My total was only $17.
If I was still at my old vet in Cary/Morrisville that will would have been over $100 easily!

Thanks. She hasnt been without heartworm meds and I have the documentation from the rescue and the vet that tested her in May. The rescue have given her meds every month. That's the frustrating part. We live SW Raleigh Brier Creekish. I have heard good things about Bayleaf before.
