It came up in another thread that the state has only budgeted just over $14 dollar per student for textbooks. Some people have stated that their schools in Wake have been using less textbooks relying on a set for class and online books etc. What is happening in Chapel Hill?
I just have a kid in elementary school (5th grade this year) but she never brings a textbook home and I have rarely seen one or heard about one. Could be different for kids in middle and high school, but I think they are moving toward more technology-based solutions. When they need to write a paper they use the school computers to do research.
Just asked my 5th grader and she said no they don't use textbooks. I really think it's just a function of more digital content rather than lack of funding for textbooks, though.
My kids have been in CH schools since first grade and I have yet to see a text book. They are now 6th and 7th. Drives me batty cause I can help them with homework if I can just see what they have been taught. Now everything is on-line. What??? No more back aches from lugging overflowing backpacks around? What a shame.
That does make sense that they would start to phase out textbooks in favor of online material. I just wanted to see if it was happening in Chapel Hill too since the others posters were all in Wake. Thank you both.

I had a 1st, 3rd, and 6th grader last year. Didn't see text books from any of the grades during the year, but at the end of the year, my 6th grader brought home 2 textbooks from social studies that the teacher was giving away as they were apparently out of date or they are no longer using them. So, I do believe my 6th grader did use some in class but did not bring them home. I'll ask her when she gets back.
I'm ok with no textbooks except for math. Worksheets with no explanations don't cut it for me. Math is not a class where one should be expected to rely solely on note taking.

I just spoke with my daughter and she said they had textbooks for every core class in her CH middle school. Most of the time they stayed in the classroom, except for the math one which she brought home every night. Ironically, she only had on average, about 5 minutes of homework per night, which was ridiculous, so I'm not sure why she even needed to bring home her textbook.
