I have heard great things about pine nuts and would like to try them in my salads and with my roasted broccoli. Holy cow they are expensive. A 2oz package at Kroger is $6.49 .... that over $50 a pound. Does anyone buy them locally at a more reasonable price. Are they that good ?
Pine nuts are also known as pignoli or pinon nuts. They ARE wonderful, best when they are purchased raw then lightly roasted just before using them. Also very good in baked goods, particularly Italian cookies. The cost is related to the labor involved in harvesting them, the current demand caused by their trendy status and their easy ability to spoil.
Untreated pine nuts (those that are not treated with chemical preservatives) can go rancid quite quickly. They can also carry the usual bugs pantry pests (weevils, brown beetles, etc.). Also be aware that those with allergies to peanuts are usually allergic to pine nuts, too.
I don't buy them prepackaged. Buy only what you can use in a couple of weeks from a bulk seller, like Whole Foods. The flavor is better, and you won't have any waste of the expensive product. If you are going to use them for a big baking project or for making a big batch of fresh pesto (which freezes quite well, btw), the Costco route would probably be the best bargain.

Try an Indian Grocer (Around the World Market) or Asian Grocer (Grand Asia), they should be at or below BJ's Prices.
MyGhost, you're post reminded me of an article I had read some years ago warning about Chinese Pine Nuts. I'm not saying if it's accurate or not, but a google search shows this is not an isolated report.
Of course, I eat anything including non-organic vegies, processed American cheese, radiated meat and GMO corn. However, the dog gets food and treats made in the USA only. No more made in China biscuits for him.
Steamed kale with pine nuts, fresh lemon juice, and sea salt is amazing and very healthy. They are expensive though. If you want to save money just crack open some pine cones, but I bet you will drive over to Kroger after 10 minutes.
I buy the big bag from Costco, not sure how much it costs. I put them in the freezer and then toast them in the oven as I use them.
