I'd like to get the carpeted areas in my first floor cleaned. Primarily because we have a 7 month old infant (not for stains).

What/who should we go with?

I don't mind doing it myself but want to know where to rent and what soap to use etc.

thanks. Any comments on the rental machines? OR any other recommendations on who does a good job for a reasonable price.

I have used a couple of different companies since we've been here, and the one I'd recommend is Triangle Carpet Cleaners. Triangle Carpet Cleaners - The #1 Carpet Cleaners for over 30 Years In The Durham, Raleigh, Cary, & Chapel Hill NC Areas, For Carpet Cleaning, Furniture Cleaning, Tile Cleaning, and Rug Cleaning. Call 919-471-8159 We have kids and were putting our house on the market. We heard they did a great job. They were a bit pricier than our previous company, but it was well worth the extra expense. Great service and great work. They steam cleaned the grout in our kitchen (for extra cost), but it looked like it was brand new tile. The carpets looked great as well. There was a spot that disappeared the day they cleaned it but came back a day or two later. So they came back for free and redid the spot. It stayed gone after that. I will use them again this spring.

Get one that uses a rotovac. Much faster but also a more thorough cleaning job.

You can DIY but it won't be nearly as good a job, it will take a while and is a pain. I've rented the Rug Doctors a couple times and yes they do remove the dirt but don't do nearly as an effective job as a steam powered rotovac.

I even rinsed again with clean water and it still leaves the soap behind which just ends up attracting more dirt.

These guys were competitive.

I really, REALLY like Affordable Carpet Care - (919) 858-0699. I have used them several times, and I've been extremely pleased. Their prices are reasonable and once the owner REALLY worked hard to work me into a busy weekend when I needed emergency carpet cleaning.

Carpets at our houses should be cleaned frequently, especially when there are children in the family. Carpets are a great hide place for germs and bacterias, we may not notice it. If you can clean your carpet once in a month and clean it professionally once in 6 months or 12 months. As there is an infant I suggest you hire professional cleaners once in two months.

I bought myself a Steam Carpet Cleaner for $100. It does its job. Yes, it may not be as powerful especially in the post-cleaning drying process, but, the one time purchase expense is less than one professional treatment.
