News vans left just a bit ago. Still some police and tape up everywhere in that half of the complex doing some forensics I guess. One of the last places I'd think this would happen.
I'd be interested to know what the background of the victims are. Seems a bit weird to rob a second floor unit that far into the complex. Why not first floor on any of the outer buildings. That's easily one of the most awkwardly placed buildings in the complex.
According to WRAL one of the officers looking for the car (not clear if they were actually chasing it or not) up at 54/540 had a "medical incident" and ran his car off the road leading the police to issue an officer down call. I.m not sure of normal police procedure but that sounds like a bit of a reach.
I don't think its much of a limb to go out on, shootings rarely are random. They left two living victims, so the chances of them getting away with it are slim and nil.

However--
Some the the radio chatter from mutual-aid EMS indicated it might have been a LEO cardiac-related incident.

Yup. Pretty good bet the officers didn't give chase onto 540 because they knew they'd get all the info they needed.
It may have been that in the confusion, someone thought the officer had been shot when he rolled his car onto the curb and blew his tire out.
