My 2 year old loves the outdoors, especially water and animals. She loved wading in the Davidson River during a trip to Western NC last summer so I'm thinking the Eno River could be fun to do this year. The ideal spot would be a good place to swim (or at least wade), walk and climb rocks...having a short hike and seeing some nature would be great too.
There are some great spots along the creek in Duke Forest as mentioned above that offer some opportunities to climb over rocks and wade in the creek (which is 10-15 feet wide). I'd start with the trailhead just east of the fire station on Whitfield road - a relatively flat trail and the creek access is not too far down.
If you park at the entrance off the Cole Mill Rd & Umstead Rd entrance, there's a downhill trail (not the one near the bathroom) that brings you right to the river and lots of rocks. It's usually shallow there unless there's been a lot of rain.
I just got back from Eno River and my daughter had a blast. We were there for over 3 hours and she enjoyed hiking, walking over the bridge, dipping her feet in the river, people watching, watching ants, butterflies, birds and having a picnic at the trailhead.
We went in the river next to the swinging bridge. It was a decent spot but there was a lot of moss on the rocks which made footing pretty slick. Is there a better place to go further upstream with less moss and better footing? I feel lazy asking since the trails aren't that long, but when you're entertaining/carrying/wandering around with a 2 year old, it's much tougher to cover a lot of ground.
If you drive down cole mill road coming from Hillsboro Street you will see some pull offs just after the bridge that goes across the Eno. Park there and you will see trails that go down to the river and on one side there are steps going down. They are steep so take it slow. If you head downstream from that point you will find places that you can wade.
