Where is the public outrage over what our "leaders' are doing to UNC? Oh, I see a few letters and articles but they are gutting our university of necessary centers and opportunities. Of course rural areas need more doctors but, as pointed out in this article, there are other ways to get that funding.

I don't agree with the way they're making laws, though I imagine the Dems used similar tactics to the approval of the N&O for decades.

However, if you spend your work life railing against the folks that fund you, in a quite partisan fashion, then do you really expect those folks to keep paying you?

Ok, color me confused. The Senate wants to dock the UNC law school $3M and use it to support the folks in rural western NC with improved provider (i.e. Doctors) services. And the Dems on this board are upset?

I personally don't think this is completely motivated by politics. The UNC system in general & UNC in particular are headed towards a quasi-public/private model IMO. UNC will likely depend more on private donations & partnerships to fund many of it's programs in the future

First, most people are in support of funding the MAHEC, including myself.

Second, there are hundreds, maybe thousand of other departments or agencies that could have been docked. Everything from the excess highway use tax within the Department of Transportation, to the School of Engineering at NC State University, to the Department of Agriculture surplus funds, to the History department at UNCG, etc..

The UNC Law School professor took direct shots at the Republican legislature. The Legislature created a special amendment to take money away from the UNC Law School.

I don't know, you tell me?

well I work at DOT and they just eliminated 30 positions in Roadway Design and there are a bunch of other units who are dealing with position cuts.

Thanks for asking :-) I think you articulated the dilemma quite well. There are always *other* places to cut ...

For the record, I've done some work with the MAHEC and they could use the support. I doubt the UNC Law School will suffer much. I see this as a net gain for the people of NC. At the end of the day, that's sorta what government should be doing.

You want to take $3 million from the Mountain Area Health Education Center to fund UNC Law? That is mostly tongue-in-cheek. But any budget involves choosing where to increase spending and where to reduce expenditures.

So why are NC taxpayers subsidizing a law school in the first place... do we have a lawyer shortage LOL?
