'As for other regional and national brands that are looking at expansion opportunities in the Triangle, Coyne says that Wegman's, the popular New York-based supermarket chain, "has certainly had their eye on our market." '
I was going to say...Publix is very interested in popping up stores everywhere in the Triangle. 2 more confirmed so far on top of the first Cary location, and more are in development.
People have been saying this for years. I've been to Wegmans up north before; sure it's a nice grocery store; but we have so many grocery stores around here and with Harris Teeter basically being the same thing; I don't think it will happen. They've made it pretty clear they can't go much further south than where they are now because of where their distribution center is (Brooklyn is still in NYS where they are based). Seems like most of their recent expansion has been in the DC area and in New England.
I'm pretty sure they are also a family owned business and pride themselves as such. Those don't tend to expand as rapidly or as widely as publicly traded companies.
Sorry yankees you're gonna have to stock up on trips back home!
Wegmans is regarded as one of the best grocery retailers but they would struggle this far away from their base unless they plan to use a local distributor like MDI. They would also need to go beyond the Triangle & finding prime locations especially in Charlotte could also be a problem

My son used to work for Lowe's Foods and I think MDI and Lowe's are commonly owned.
If so, doubtful MDI would want to serve a competitor.
