I'm looking for some recommendations for picnic places in Raleigh, but I'm not opposed to checking out other areas in the Triangle. I did a search and many results seem dated or revolve around picnic shelters. I'm looking more for an old school picnic with a blanket under a tree.

I've checked out Dorothea Dix and there are some nice views of the skyline and plenty of shade but I'm wondering what else is out there. We have so many parks but I'm not sure which ones have a nice shady and grassy area to picnic on.

Looking for: Shade, grass, scenic views (lake, river, skyline, etc.), quiet. Just want to relax and enjoy the day!

Thanks in advance!

THe rose garden is nice. not a scenic view but a cool vibe.

Being in Holly Springs, do you ever go to Harris Lake Park? I kayak quite a bit at Harris Lake and love it. Although, it does get pretty packed on Saturday & Sunday afternoons. There is a really nice playground and areas where you can have a picnic and grill.

Blue Jay Point is really pretty! You can go for a short walk and see Falls Lake, and there is a large green space to picnic.

If you take the first leg of the Company Mill trail in Umstead, there is a very nice shaded area next to a broad stream with large flat slabs of rock to sit on. It's a comfortable 1 mile hike. If this image comes across like I intended it to you can click on the red dot where the first trail meets the loop for an image. Once you cross the foot bridge take a right and find a place to sit.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! I'm checking them out.

spsmith, yes I do love Harris Lake park, but I was looking to venture out to see what else is out there. When you walk the trails around Harris Lake there are some nice little sandy areas near the water to picnic. I like that park alot, so I was looking to see what else is out there!
