I would like to know your opionions on this area. I'm looking for a house between 150-175k and saw on the MLS many houses in the price range in between 440 and 540. How is the commute to RTP from this area?

Default Homes in N. Raleigh

The area you're talking about is a pretty wide swath from west to east... The closer you are on the west side - like the Leesville area the easier your commute will be to RTP. However as you head east you'll find traffic during rush hours. Best thing to do is head towards the house you like during peak hours (in the opposite direction). You'll get a good idea of the traffic and how it moves. Happy house hunting.

Are the areas in North Raleigh nice, safe, good schools, family friendly areas. I read here that South East Raleigh isn't that great. Any other parts of Raleigh to stay away from?

N. Raleigh offers some very nice areas live - with both large and smaller subdivisions to choose from. As for the schools that's been such a hot topic I suggest that you check the Wake County School site; Wake County Public School System and decide for yourself how you & you're children would like the schools. Not sure what you heard bad about S.E Raleigh - I have clients that currently live there and I've not heard bad things from them. There's actually quite a bit of development going on there right now. However the commute to RTP from there isn't easy, yet (until the 540 makes it way around).

We just bought a home in North HIlls. Great area and neighborhood! Not sure if there is anything under 200K there, but there may be in the surrounding neighborhoods-try a search with zip codes 27612,27613,27609-those are pretty good areas IMHO. Good luck!
