We have friends visiting from South Africa. Their son is very interested in American history, particularly the Civil War.

Can people suggest places/events that might be of interest within a one hour drive of the Triangle?

1. The Confederate Monument on the grounds of the (old) State Capitol- This monument is in remembrance of North Carolina's Confederate dead (nearly one quarter of all Confederate deaths were from North Carolina). The three statues on the monument represent Confederate infantry, cavalry, and artillery soldiers. The inscription, "First at Bethel - Last at Appomatox," represents the forwardness and tenacity of North Carolina's soldiers during the Civil War.

2. Bennett Place, Durham. The largest surrender of CSA troops occurred here. http://www.bennettplacehistoricsite.com/

3. Bentonville Battlefield - One of the last major battles of the war took place here in March, 1865. NC Historic Sites - Bentonville Battlefield

4. Averasboro Battlefield - Another battle, occurring a few weeks before Bentonville. Averasboro - Civil War Battlefield, Museum, Gift Shop, and Special Events > Home

IMO the best experience would be to head to fort fisher where you can walk on the battlements and they have a historic museum

lots of interesting and specific NC civ war history about the blockade runners.

NC Museum of History has a lot about the Civil War, too. Well worth a visit and free. He might be interested in Historic Stagville.

The North Carolina Civil War Experience has a good list of Civil War sites in NC.

It is a further drive, but may be worth it IMO. Richmond has a lot of that stuff, from the Petersburg battlefield to the Museum of the Confederacy to the Confederate Executive Mansion.

The NC History Museum is a great choice. The History museum in case you have not been inside, is much bigger on the inside than on the outside. Allow 2 hours to really enjoy it thoroughly plus the weaponry exhibit upstairs. The walk through the ages of NC was especially well done.

Historic Oakwood Cemetery has an amazing civil war section. I can spend all day walking there.

Agree with this suggestion. Fredericksburg battle site is a great visit. Petersburg and Spotsylvania sites are also closeby.
