My daughter has just been offered a job as a nurse at Duke, coming from MSU (go Green) . We are going to go down and look for an apartment next month, having never been there...Can someone make some suggestions regarding areas to look ? She is 22, will have a car, probably can afford up to 900 per month, and doesn't really want to live where college students live and party all night.....Is Duke a 'downtown' hospital ? thank you

Check out this spot...near I-40 and Southpoint Mall:
There are a lot of apartment complexes near Southpoint Mall and on or near that stretch of Hwy 54 (South Durham). No, Duke Univ and hospitals are not downtown but close to it, especially Duke West Campus.
I would look in the ninth street and downtown area first. If she has to drive into work, she'll most likely be parking in this area along hillsborough Rd anyway and taking in a bus into the med center, why not just live there instead? This area is vibrant, with groceries, restaurants and pubs all within walking distance, and free bus service into campus.
The undergrad student population at Duke has a very small footprint, only 6000 and 2/3 live on campus. Meanwhile theres over 8000 grad/prof students, and 25,000 employees in the medical center. Durham is the opposite of east lansing, the people who live and work here vastly outnumber the students.
I really like the old tobacco warehouses that have been converted into apartments near downtown Durham. One advantage is that she could use the free Bull City Connector shuttle and thus avoid the hassle of parking. Between the Duke and VA medical centers parking space is a real premium. There are a ton of new apartments that have gone up in the downtown area. Lots of neat bars and restaurants nearby.
Is she willing to have a roommate? That may open options.
I live downtown and have been adoring every second of it since I moved here, but it would be tough for $900. I live in West village (the one linked above) and although they may technically have rents as low as that....the likelihood of getting one is slim to nil and the VAST majority of their units are significantly more. I asked about studios when moving here...turns out they only have a handful out of many many hundreds of units. There may be options if she goes with a privately-owned rental, but these can be hit-or-miss in terms of quality.
Agree with the above posters about checking out the area near Southpoint. There were some fantastic finds out there. We wanted someplace walkable (been a suburbanite my whole life, so this was one of those "needed experience" things for me). Sutton Station should have some things in your price range and was absolutely stunning inside (though kind of bland outside). There is also some nice stuff to the north (Clairmont @ Hillandale) and east (Artisan @ Brightleaf). Feel free to PM if you want other recommendations.
My daughter recently moved from Michigan for a job at Lab Corporations of America and she lives in Bridges at Wind River. Her rent is within your asking price. It took about 10-15 to drive to Duke.
To answer your question, no, Duke is not a "downtown" hospital--it is a university/teaching hospital and thus the environs (in one direction, at least) are more like university buildings than "downtown" Durham, though that's not horribly far away.

I would not want to live in Durham. I'd rather drive to work.
