If you work for the federal government either as employee or contractor, I recommend First Environments (on EPA campus). It's top notched 5 stars yada yada, and very active parent participation. The chef there buys food/produce from local organic farms, and they actually just hired a pastry chef for breakfast and snacks (my mouth waters just looking at their healthy tasty menu). It's not as expensive as the national chains and other 5-stars, since you get a nice federal employee discount.

First Environments is supposed to be excellent. But not just any federal employee can get in. I work at the VA and can't get in there. You have to work down at the EPA campus I guess.
The Duke Bright Horizons only takes children of Duke students/employees, so you don't get "priority" for it, you just get on the list.
You're right---I was thinking about the other centers in the Duke childcare partnership, where Duke employees "get priority." The Duke Children's Campus is for Duke faculty and staff only... Nonetheless, I think it's utterly ridiculous for a child of two long-time Duke employees to have to wait upwards of 3 years for a spot. Something seems amiss with that system to me. I understand that waitlists are unavoidable, but this is ridiculous.
Considering that the university alone has 7,000+ employees and the med center double to triple that amount, it's not surprising that a daycare center with 160+ spaces cannot accommodate everyone's children. I wish it were otherwise.
I visited the Lakewood Avenue Children's school in Durham NC and I really like it. Now we are waiting to hear if our baby can be chosen. Does anyone know about their selection criteria? There is no waiting list but they choose which kids they want. They did not ask too much about us or our child when we registered so I would like to know how they will make their choices.
We are also on the list for Duke children's campus.. almost a year now and we are still at the bottom. 3 years to get in? WOW...
For what's it worth, I switched my daughter to Primrose in Hope Valley Farms in Durham. We LOVE it!
