Asking those that may be in the know...

I have been applying for numerous Wake County School Teaching positions, even been to a few of their job fairs, and nothing. Not a darn thing - meaning no calls, no emails, no contact.

I am currently teaching outside the county, but live here and no longer want a long commute. I've only lived in this area, heck NC for that matter, for six years. All I ever hear from the news and all who find out I am a teacher "WCSS is hiring! They need teachers!" Well..... I have. I am very discouraged as I apply and never get a call. Is this a system that just "posts" because they legally have to and hire friends?

Before I get the hate comments - I have never been fired from a job; I have excellent teaching evaluations; I have excellent references; there is not one thing that would bar me from being hired, never mind being interviewed or called.

I have talked to only ONE person that grew up here and tells me its all about who you know and that they do post because they have to.

So discouraged.

What are you certified in? that makes a big difference. I moved down here with 14 years teaching experience. I had 3 interviews in 2 days-all for special ed. I am regular and special ed certified.
After teaching there for a year, I decided I was done teaching, but do know before they look outside, the positions are posted for teachers in the district to transfer. We live in JoCo and my kids' schools have lost many teachers to Wake, so they do hire!

what is your certification in? Are you currently teaching? If so, the fact that you want to leave mid-year would be a huge red flag. If not, I would suggest looking for a leave replacement this spring. Principals are always looking for certified teachers to fill in, and it would get your foot in the door. Hiring for next year will really get going from March on. If you can get into a school you are interested in as a leave replacement before then and do well, you will be in a great position to start looking for a permanent job.

They are opening a handful of new schools next year so maybe your timing is just off. I have to wonder if your salary scale is too high, how long have you been teaching?

My only other comment is perhaps you should do a mock interview with an impartial person who will give you honest feedback. Even the best schools are always looking for teachers. If you have interviewed a number of times with absolutely no interest, something is wrong. You need to find out what it is.

It sounds like she has never even gets a reply to her inquiries.

What are you doing to pursue a job? Are you just using the online system? Or are you reaching out to principals personally?

My wife had problem getting hired until August and she got 2 job offers. Elementary schools...also with all the new schools opening, they like to hire from other schools around the area so you may get hired by the school where teachers leave instead of the new schools.

Marliz - like I stated, I am currently teaching. I teach in another district. WCSS has many jobs posted - CURRENTLY - listing these jobs as starting in Dec and January. I do not WANT to leave mid year, but if I can get a job closer to home, than I would take that job. Last year, in the SPRING, I attended the WCSS job fair... not one single call.

I am certified in PE, Counseling, and Administration. WCSS has numerous positions currently listed. To clarify, I have yet to be contacted to interview. (Hind site, the special ed is the way to go)

Are the listing on the WCSS not valid? Not accurate? Have they hired and forgotten to remove the listing?

RoscoMac - I submit the online app, and call the principal of that school. Of five schools, I was only able to speak with one principal for him to tell me they already hired for the position.

Thank you for all that responded!

I'm no expert but are those teaching certifications? Those look more like certification in certain fields (i.e. PE, Counsel and Admin), not actual teaching.
