Thank you so much for all the advice gained by reading the many posts.

I am doing my homework as much as possible and with a little luck I will be ready to purchase a home in the spring. I am one of those darn NYer's that wants to experience a gentler, kinder lifesyle in an area that my husband and I as well as my children might actually be able to afford to live.

We don't want another NY town in NC, we have lived in different states and we enjoy the challenge of new ways of doing things. We are very excited to be contributing member of a community.

I could use advice on a good realtor. I am looking in the 200k range for a home in a nice community that is already established with trees, and maybe some older folks like my husband and I. We are in early mid 50's, too young to be in an 55+ community, yet too old to be in the "yuppie" or new family type neighborhood.

I would love a quaint downtown.

Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay- Varina and Northeast Raleigh are all on my radar screen and I would love suggestions as to neighborhoods.

I am thinking a ranch type home. My husband also does not want a pool community, he is determined to put a private pool in (his dream) ......and yes, I know that pools are not a selling plus as they are here. But hopefully that won't be issue. We don't plan to move for awhile which is why I need to be very careful.

I am planning a four day trip in first week of December.

Thanks again for any advice.

SOuLJOURNER, we are also in our fifties are are looking for the same type of neighborhood. We have been living in a 60's neighborhood now, but it's becoming more and more yuppified. We were impressed with Cary, but I don't know if that's the right area for use due to over regulation. It seems there are not that many ranch houses for sale in the areas we've investigated. This board has been extremely helpful to me as I've gone back and read most all of the posts.

I would suggest Hillsborough. It has a pretty, historic downtown area and it's close to Chapel Hill and Durham.

Yet another suggestion..........I would look in north raleigh. Older homes, trees (imagine, trees in a neighborhood), quality building, and convenient to many things! We live in wake forest, which has a wonderful downtown area, and some great homes as well, but some feel like it is too far "out". My other suggestion is durham. There are some great neighborhoods, lots of brick one story homes in nice neighborhoods.

Thank you all so much. I think I will add Wake Forest to my list of towns to visit. I have friends in Fuquay, Holly Springs and Apex....all of whom are warning me away from Cary. Interesting...since it has such a good reputation. This is such an awesome site. I have learned so much about landfills, nuclear power plants, wells, chemical factories, school concerns, tornados, bugs, trees, town developements......real estate, old vs new, boonies vs "in town".......again thank you all. I plan on taking you up on some of your ideas and PM's. Regards, Deborah
