There's snow forecast tomorrow starting late morning. We have a flight at 5pm. How easily do they shut RDU? Should we expect cancellation or delay or nothing?
RDU itself rarely shuts down completely. The airlines, however, sometimes decide not to fly in/out of RDU. Tomorrow's forecast looks minor and I wouldn't sweat it.
What the airlines care about is ice and freezing rain/drizzle. Snow isn't really that big of a deal, maybe some delays due to deicing but that normally gets built somewhat into the block times in the winter (ie it's expected, at least on the AA side they do).
They won't shut down RDU, but give yourself PLENTY of time to get to the airport. As soon as the first flake falls, people will leave work and drivers will freak out and traffic will be a headache.
Thanks. That's all good news. We are leaving Ravenscroft at 3 for a 5pm flight. Should be enough time
What people are saying is that if snow starts falling, you'll need MORE time. That is two hours before flight time. They used to recommend you arrive 2 hours early. I think that is somewhat been relaxed, but you still want to be there, at security at least an hour before flight (I usually allow more time, just in case). If snow starts falling, and IF people freak out, as they are apt to do, traffic could take more than the allotted hour.
Simply put, if you have any concerns, it's better to bring a book and kill some time at the airport, rather than to be late, and have plenty of time to read that book in Ravenscroft for the next several days....
If you're parking and then need to walk to the terminal, that's going to add 10 minutes probably.
Just keep an eye on the roads and be prepared to leave earlier if things are starting to look dicey. You get some slick stuff down on the roads, and all of a sudden those 10 miles on 540 will take a lot longer.
