NCDOT has awarded a contract to repave a 14-mile section of US-64 (Future I-87) between Old Carriage Road near Red Oak, and Kingsboro Road east of Rocky Mount. Shoulder work is mentioned, though it's not clear if the shoulders will be widened to interstate standards.
That starts just west of I-95 and runs for about 14 miles, so it's about $1.5 million per mile. Doesn't sound like extensive shoulder work to me.
Yeah, I was afraid of that. Seems like it would be better to go ahead and widen the shoulders now while they're repaving the lanes, instead of having to go back later and do it.
Under the new STIP, I wonder how long it will take to see any of Future I-587 west of I-95 converted to real I-587.
Looks like we got our answer.
In today's NCDOT press release about the sign changes, including a new numbering system for the section between I-95 and Zebulon, it was noted that a contract to upgrade the rest of US-264/Future I-587 to interstate standards between I-95 and Zebulon will be awarded in 3 to 4 years.
NCDOT awarded a contract to resurface I-587 in Wilson County between NC-58 and the Greene County line. Bridge preservation work is also included in the contract.
Work can begin next month, and is expected to be finished by summer 2024.
