hi, does anyone know how hard it is to get into a charter school in the chapel hill or cary area if you apply to a couple of them? I'd love my kids to go to a montessori one but it seems like they receive a lot of applicants.
Thanks!

It only depends on how many applicants they get. It's a true lottery. Your odds of winning are dependent on the number of entries.

It also depends on how many siblings that apply.
For example, Sterling Montessori in Morrisville had 1,111 applicant for 60 kindergarten spots.
However, 40 were already spoken for by siblings. A whopping 1.8% chance of getting in!

We applied for 4 and didn't get in to any. They were all like hhlebiczki described where at the end of the day there were maybe 20 spots open to non-siblings and 1000 applicants for those spots. It's crazy...I'd try but definitely don't depend on it. Also if you're thinking about this fall forget it...you're too late.

Generally the most open spots will be the year/grade the school starts. So if it is a 6-12, 6th grade will have the most openings every year, with 9th grade being second most. if it is 9-12, 9th grade will have the most open spots.

And if you find one with openings, it's likely because they are new and have no track record. If they've been around for more than a couple of years and they don't have a waiting list a mile long, something isn't right.

What grade level are you looking for? Cary/Morrisville is likely to have a new charter school in the Fall of 2017, but it will begin at 9th grade.

This is good info. I was wondering about this as well. Sounds like I need to move to an uncapped neighborhood with a good school and not count on winning a lottery!
