I love men's Levis but when I get the ones that fit well around the waist, there is too much fabric in the leg and they look ridiculous. I am old school; prefer jeans without stretch. I tried having a pair tailored by that wonderful seamstress in Cary (Krstyna I think) and while she has done amazing work on some dresses for me, the jeans ended up looking altered and not quite right.

Anyone?

There are so many options out there in men's jeans with such a variety of fit styles, I cannot imagine buying ones with non ideal fit and spending on custom tailoring. You can get pretty much any fit you want, stretch or no stretch, as long as you're willing to spend some time trying some things on. Even without moving away from your preferred brand, there are a lot of different styles of Levis including tapered, slim, etc. If you're shopping at a store where they old have one style I'd try a few different stores.

Downtown Raleigh actually has a high quality denim maker/workshop in ("Raleigh Denim"). I wonder if they would do it, although I'd guess it isn't going to be a cheap as the average tailor. They also have custom made tapered jeans for men if you could make that work.

I sew as a hobby and have for most of my life. I'm also rather short and so have had to alter things for most of my life too.

Jeans are one of THE hardest things to tailor and keep looking "right". As the OP mentioned, the previous pair he had altered didn't quite look ok after the tailoring was done. This is just one of the hazards of working on jeans. That said, it's not entirely impossible but could take working with the tailor to get the things done the right way but your expectations shouldn't be perfection.

All that said, for big/important/really difficult tailoring jobs that I couldn't do myself I've used the various locations of Lee's Tailors around Wake County and always been happy with them.

Because of they way they are constructed, jeans don't do well with major alterations.

Your better bet is to invest in a few pairs of custom fit jeans. By the time you buy off the rack and atler, you are halfway there in price anyway.

Thanks so much! And, yes, I know from people in my family that sew that jeans are very difficult.

I am a "She"...guess I should have said that!
I do not care for the women's Levis and do not like jeans with stretch (Old school I guess).
Maybe now my predicament is clearer.
My husband looked into having a custom pair of Levi's made for me in NYC. Upwards of $700. Yikes!

Thanks all for your input!
