Hello All!

We will be in the area this month to pick out a neighborhood to live in. We are from the suburbs of NJ and have 3 children ages 6-10. Can you recommend a few communities for us to check out? High rated, not capped schools (Also high rated by parents/kids) at least an acre, community pool, Suburban type feel but still with a few miles of a decent downtown and not too far from potential jobs, if needed. My husband is a dog trainer and we currently also board 1 dog at a time. Budget is about $400,000. Thanks in advance for any help, even if it's not exactly what I'm looking for!

Are you looking for something new? I would suggest looking for an older home so you can probably get more acreage (but doubtful you can get an acre) and avoid nosy HOAs who will potentially have problems with you boarding lots of dogs. Most of Raleigh feels suburban.

The Triangle area is very spread out, so there's no way to predict if a specific neighborhood is is "not too far" from potential jobs. My advice would be to rent before buying.

Beyond that, what you're looking for may exist, but is extremely rare. I think (and frankly hope) local zoning regulations will prevent you from operating a dog boarding business at your home, if thats what you are planning.

Wake Forest and Apex may work for you, but again, finding a location that meets all your criteria will be virtually impossible.

If you are willing to have less than an acre, check out 27609.

I edited my post to show we only board 1 dog at a time and it has to be a dog my husband has been training. We would only do it down there if we had the proper property and if it was allowed. We are very respectful of our neighbors. Thanks for all the answers so far and if anyone else has ideas, let me know. It's just a wish list so if I can't get everything on it, that's fine. The house doesn't need to be new but I wouldn't want a complete fixer upper, either.

Yes, 27609 is a great area. We live in an older level split level home that we're planning to update over time on .5 acre, but everything could be kept as is. We are a 20 min walk to North Hills, a 5 min drive to 440, a neighborhood pool, and have a great elementary school.

Look up houses in North Hills and Lakemont.

Look down towards Fuquay - Varina for land available.

Check out 27613 (North Raleigh). You can definitely find something within your budget and meeting most of your parameters.

1. year-round calendar schools, or traditional calendar?
2. 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms?
3. city water/sewer?
4. definition of "few miles" and "decent downtown"
5. Why an acre?
6. community pool = in the neighborhood, or some pool club you can join nearby?

Check out north Raleigh too. But the 1 acre part may be hard in that budget - however if you're willing to compromise you will find something. Most families have a dog or two it seems so if you're only keeping 1-3 or do I wouldn't worry about it. If you plan to have 20 that's a different ball game.
