I meant to post this when it appeared in the News & Observer last week. Many of you are aware that Amy and David Sedaris grew up in Raleigh, near North Hills (when it was a mall) and David has always referenced the area in his works. amy has a new show that started this week and is based on the "home shows" for stay-at-home ladies that ran back in the 1970s, such as Peggy Mann and Bette Elliot.

The best part for us long-timers is, an actual clip of "At Home with Peggy Mann"! Frequently someone on this board will ask what a "North Carolina" accent sounds like--while there has never been just "one" accent for NC and now, in the Triangle at least, it's a hodgepodge, back then, you were much more likely to hear "genuine" regional accents and Peggy Mann's was very common even in the '70s, 10 years after IBM started the Great Transplant Flood. While her accent is what might be called "Coastal Plain" and mostly found in the eastern part of the state, Raleigh natives generally had an accent similar to this up until the 1970s or so.
These home shows are both nostalgic and amusing to watch now, accents aside, and I saw Amy S's first episode (I think it was a double episode) and she does a wonderful job satiring them! And check out the old commercials for A&P, South Square Mall (in Durham, no longer there), and Jane Curtain doing a Hoover ad!
