So from my previous thread, I've decided to rent. The question now is between living on the UNC campus or renting in a different area.
As a single student, I only qualify for their "Odum Village," which is $3000 per semester and ~650 square feet. Does anyone have experience with living in Odum Village or know anything about it?
I was thinking of possibly renting on my own in the Carbboro/Chapel Hill area. From browsing the forum and apartmentratings.com, it seems like Autumn Woods is the most recommended apartment complex.
Are there any other nice apartment complexes? My price range is up to about $1400 (w/utilities) since I'd like to have a roommate with a 2-bedroom. Or maybe $800 w/utilities for a 1-bedroom. Is this about the right price range for the area? I'm basing it off of the dorm pricing. I'm not too sure, because I'm used to the higher prices in the Evanston/Chicago area.
These are my preferences:
2 bedroom, 2 bath
washer/dryer
basic kitchen amenities
pool / fitness center
parking
by bus line or close walking distance to UNC
As for the area, I'd like to be around other graduate students or young professionals (I'm in my early 20s). I want a nice, safe neighborhood that's reasonably near a social scene. I don't mind - what someone on the forum called- "yuppies" as they will probably be in the same field as me (management).

I don't have any specific suggestions for apartment complexes, as I have a strong dislike for apartment complexes and rent a single family home At your price point (1400), there are tons of options. I would go on Craigslist and look at their rental listings. In my housing search (Dec 2007), most 2 bed/2bath townhouses in CH, Carrboro, or SW Durham were going for 11-1200 dollars. One thing I would suggest is to make sure you are on a bus line - parking at UNC is a nightmare, and pretty expensive.
i'm not a big fan of craigslist simply because there are so many spam listings, and it seems like a neverending search. i tried looking for one for one through craigslist when i was about to study in london, and it was just the biggest hassle, in my opinion.
i'd much prefer to go through a large management, which is why i wonder if there are any recommended apartment complexes in chapel hill or carbbaro.
Well, then rent.com for complexes. You'll definitely find something in your price range. Average rents in Chapel Hill are $650 for a single, or $400 per bedroom (800 for 2 bedroom, 1200 for 3, etc).
