With all the reports in the area of people following UPS trucks and stealing packages, why is it that I sit 15 feet from my front door all day, and never know when UPS or USPS drops off a package? Is there a legitimate reason they don't ring doorbells or knock?
I remember the days when they'd actually see if you're home, and make you sign if you were home. I know they're busy, but the throwing the box on the porch and sprinting back to their truck is a little annoying.
They rang my doorbell yesterday. This is probably just this particular driver, and they are very busy this time of the year. In my area, they have hired helpers on the trucks to help get the packages out. A young man put my package on the doorstep and rang the doorbell, and the driver was still in the truck watching him.
They are expected to deliver something like 10 deliveries an hour. As a result I would imagine they try to avoid engaging with homeowners who often might be ready for a little chat. Five minutes would be way too long.

They can't push a button and walk off? I don't want them to engage with me either - just give me a heads up that there's a package sitting on my porch, it's not much to ask.
I've had packages end up soaked when I've been home all day because I never realized it was delivered.

Yep, I agree with you. I have had packages get rained on while I was home but had no idea they had delivered it.
My regular UPS guy always rings the bell before heading back to his truck.
None of the others do, however...USPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.
