I just got word that an old friend’s daughter and hubby are down here scouting Raleigh/Durham as a possible place to relocate from NY. They are interested in the downtown areas. I don’t go out all that much. What should they see? Where do young couple live in the cities if their budget is middle class? They are in their mid twenties and I am guessing they are also interested in a little bit of night life before they start having kids. I don’t know if they have jobs lined up. My impression is no and I don’t even know what they do. I will caution them about moving without employment.

Thanks.

In Raleigh, take them downtown and eat at Poole's or Armadillo Grill, and visit one of the brewery's like Crank Arm or Clouds. Sounds like they can't afford to live in downtown proper, but might find something around St. Mary's.

Thank you. I was thinking about Poole’s.

I would recommend that you get more details as to what their interests are.

If I were them I would do a lot of walking in the two downtowns to see which appealed to them. They can check get-offline.com to get a feel of activities available in the area. No reason they can't use yelp to find places to eat, unless you want to share hidden gems.

If they can't afford to live in downtown, then they should expand their search outwards from the core I until they find something they can afford and feel comfortable in.

Downtown Durham is really cool. I went to this shop called Everyday Magic in Durham over the weekend, walked to Rise for a donut, and one of my mom friends was hanging out at this neat hotel that was in the center of everything, Unscripted.

"What should they see?"
they should see the downtown at night. you mentioned night life.
Durham has the 9th Street "area" which is about 4 blocks in any direction.
in Raleigh, stay away from Hillsborough St. across from State. construction mess.
