I just applied for a couple of jobs at Duke that would take me at least 30 minutes to get to in the morning, under normal circumstances. If the traffic report I watch each morning is any indication though, it looks like expecting "normal" would be laughable.

I'm an early riser and used to leave my house at 7am for my last job, which I think would somewhat minimize the commuting problems. On the way home though, there's no escaping it. I suppose if things were really bad traffic-wise, I could go walk around the garden, take a hike in the woods, or sit and eat yummies at Guglehupf.

In google maps you can plugin a location, destination, and time of day and it will give you an estimated time which accounts for traffic (and show problem areas).

Yes, I'm aware. These are estimates though, and I'm looking to open a conversation with CD people to see what kind of commute people deal with for their jobs.

I only recently opened up my job search to Durham, I was looking just in Raleigh for a while, but I think I need to cast my net a little bit further.

I drive about 50 minutes from RTP to Fuquay. If they would put 540 to 492 it would knock about 20 mins off that. But I can work from home 1-2 days a week as well and go in a little later in the am.

I work from 9-6.

In the morning, 18 minutes to get from my place near North Hills to Crossroads.
In the afternoon, I usually monitor the traffic until 440 clears up (anywhere from 5:45-6:30), 14 minutes.

If I ride my bike, 45 minutes from my house to my office.
If I take the bus, 40-45 minutes to take the #2 in front of my house downtown, transfer to the #305 which has a stop in front of my office.

When I was commuting it was about 15 minutes from W. Cary to RTP.

When I was commuting from 27513, it was around 20-25 due to Davis Drive.

I work from home, but take the kids to school 25 min away. My spouse walks to work. Probably takes him 15-20 min on foot.

Ok you're making me feel a little bit better for considering this.

I mean, I'm sure a lot of people do that trek every morning and evening but if I could find something closer, it would be nice.

If your commute to Duke would involve 147 and normal business hours, it could be pretty unpleasant. For two years I commuted from SW Cary to downtown Durham. It took me anywhere from 30 minutes in the morning to 1 1/4 hours in the evening, depending on weather/accidents/full moon/or just plain bad luck.

Now I have a 9 mile commute to RTP - I try to avoid Davis Drive during "regular" commuting hours and it takes me about 15 minutes to get to/from work.
