well they could follow the North Hills idea and tear it all down and start over except for a few stores. That's really their only hope now. They would need to find a lot of stores similar to North Hills , higher end places .
IKEA generally builds next to large interstate interchanges and the fact that Raleigh only sits along one interstate is an issue. The only possible place I could see is Brier Creek (540) or White Oak (40) out of these Brier Creek is dense enough or will be in the coming years. Sorry guys I'm from Raleigh and was hoping for this for my family in the area.

It *has* been their plan for years. They're actively trying to kill off the mall to make it easier to tear things down as soon as the town approves it. Planning mixed-use with apartments and offices over retail, as well as dedicated housing and office components.
But I assume they'll hit pause and revise the plan to encompass the whole site.
Actually, I think a comprehensive mixed-use solution would be superior to having Ikea in that location.
Best of all would have been IKEA as part of a comprehensive plan, but it really was like two separate projects that happened to directly abut each other. I agree a more comprehensive plan taking in the whole site will be better overall...just need some anchors.

I think the lack of interstate visibility is probably the reason they canned it.
As far as where else it could go, South Hills may need to be demolished when they rebuild the I-40/I-440/US-1/US-64 interchange near crossroads. So there's a spot next to one of the busiest interchanges in Wake.
But maybe they just are pulling back on expansion plans in the US and this is a casualty of that effort.
