Harnett County is worth a look. Southern Harnett is basically North Fayetteville, and North Harnett is just an extension of Wake County

Commuting from there to RTP is not gonna happen, I don't care if you're used to a long commute or not.

Split the difference and live in southern Wake or JoCo (Clayton).
It will make NYC look like a church supper.

Crime is awful.

There is a lot of crime in Fayetteville, but it's mostly property crime. If you use common sense and secure your stuff, you'll be okay. The vast majority of violent crimes in Fay happens between people who know each other, so there's that

You could also look at Smithfield. It's about 45 mins to RTP via US-70 and I-40 and 40 mins to Fayetteville Via I-95. More country than say Clayton but would be a much better commute imho.

you are not getting to RTP in 45 minutes from Smithfield.

I'd move to Fayetteville and rent. Assume you'll make the same amount next job as current job, figure a budget. See if anything is available in the NW Fuquay area that give you both reasonable commutes (And Fayetteville is pretty spread out too, just to Methodist University in N Fayetteville is 50 minutes).

Lillington/Buies Creek with Campbellā€™s Pharmacy, Nursing, and Osteopathic Medicine Schools could also be a good option based on location and career interests.

Check out McGee Crossroads area around I40/HWY210 - good access to Raleigh and about 40 minutes to both Fayetteville and RTP. Even better when (if) 540 comes through. Lots of development going on and pretty good schools.

Yes, at rush hour on 40 it’d take 45 minutes just to get to/from the other side of Raleigh. When looking at driving time, make sure to check in rush hour. And these days rush hour is 7 to 10 am and 3 to 7 pm, I feel.

OP, honestly Fayeteville is not a great place to live IMHO and with long commute both ways this may not be an upgrade on quality of life. Keep in mind many people are moving to the area and infrastructure is not catching up. So your commute could get worse.

With work in Fayeteville and RTP living in FV I’m afraid you both will have exhausting commute and end up barely seeing the kid. Beware.

When we moved, we chose to rent where we wanted to buy vs closer to work. It was a wise decision because we got to know the area well. Stores, alternative commute routes, noise, etc. It’s also better for the kid to stay in the same school, I believe. And you can start building new relationships too.

Personally, I just wouldn’t take a job in Fayeteville, so I’m not sure what to suggest in your situation. But think carefully about your decision. Good luck!

you're also not getting from McGees Crossroads 40/210 to RTP in 45 minutes during anything resembling traffic.
