Alltel Pavillion (which I think is called something different now) is in Raleigh. They get the largest acts in the area and usually have some great concerts throughout the summer.
Sorry this doesn't help with live concerts, but... if you haven't already seen it, the 3-D U2 concert is on at the IMAX in downtown Raleigh. It feels like you are actually there. (I could almost feel Bono's sweat drip on me.) I don't think it's showing much longer though.
Walnut Creek (no matter what the sponsor, it will always be WC to me) is the largest. It is accessible via Rock Quarry or Poole Rd or Jones Sausage Rd in Raleigh.
Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary is a nice place and gets some good shows.
Downtown Raleigh Live concerts at Moore Sq in Raleigh are free and worth checking out. They should have a schedule out soon according to my friends at Deep South.
Sometime the Museum of Art will have outdoor concerts.
Raleigh Wide Open in the fall is worth watching out for (on Fayetteville Street). Maybe one day Raleigh will get Alive After 5 free concerts back.
Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke had the Stones a while back. Carter Finley at NC State used to get big acts (Pink Floyd, The Who, The Rolling Stones, etc), but hasn't had one in a while.
There are several indoor concert arenas. The RBC Center is probably the main one nowadays. And lots and lots of smaller indoor venues.
The Eagles and The Moody Blues are scheduled to appear in Myrtle Beach June 2-3 (I think those are the dates) for the opening of Hard Rock's theme park. Last time I checked, tickets were still available, but there is no such thing as any sort of preferred seating. I think you are buying a two-day pass, and taking your chances on seeing the groups.
Quite a few groups/performers make it to the Raleigh area. We drove up from Wilmington on numerous occasions to go hear a performance at Walnut Creek. My daughter drives up, still, to hear singers at the Koka Booth Amphitheater.
Groups used to appear at Carowinds, near Charlotte. Several performers appear each year as part of the retinue for the NC Azalea Festival down in Wilmington. Wilmington is fairly good about trying to book a variety for differing music tastes.
Looks like this list will probably fill out a bit more, but it's a start!! I'll def check out the Wailers...
