No worries ... all the "bad parts" are being gentrified . Way to go Raleigh!

Move to Cary. You already need to commute there.
Yeah I got around that by agreeing that once our kids are school age we will move to Cary/Morrisville/Apex. But the first house I'd like us to be somewhere cheaper but still a relatively short drive to that area. And most of Southeast Raleigh/Garner is a pretty easy drive.

You're not going to save yourself any money in the "long" run. Taxes, realtor fees, movers, gas, mileage on car, tolls, lower home appreciation, etc, etc. That and there's a good chance mortgage rates will be higher when you decide to move to Cary.

Just do it now - sacrifice a little on the house. You can always improve a house.

I would if there were any houses for sale in Cary that were within our budget.

I've got a feeling, based on his first "how are the schools?" topic, that there aren't any children yet.

Under 200K.

No children yet, but would like to in the near future. The reason I'm asking all these questions is because I'd like my future kids to grow up in the same city/general area and have a strong sense of community/hometown pride. Something I never had but as I get older wish I did.

Either adjust your expectations or change the area of the country you are looking in. The Midwest has some strong very family oriented cities that are growing with low housing prices.

This area is full of an odd combo of locals and transplants. The “hometown pride” thing isn’t particularly strong here.

Buy a townhouse. There are some here in Cary under 200k.
