Lived in various towns on Long Island for 45 years and never saw one in the wild. My nephew had a wildlife guy come to his birthday party and I got to hold an enormous yellow and white one which was so cool.
Snakes in the south are just friendlier. Those in the north tend to keep to themselves.
Weather patterns do have a big effect since snakes are cold blooded. They won’t be out of their cozy quarters unless the ground is warm. Plus there are more species in the warmer climates.
I think less a north south thing and more of an urban-rural density thing.
