Having most recently returned to the Triangle, we kept the expansion of 540 in mind and the proximity of being relatively close to amenities and healthcare. We ended up in JoCo just over the Wake county line in the 40-42 area. We looked in Riverwood -- beautiful place. But ... location, location, location ... on another note, I find it unbelievable that Benson and Four Oaks are considered "commutable" to Raleigh. Years ago, living in Garner or Fuquay was considered 'way out there'.
I don't do predictions. I've been fooled too many times...including 2008. And I even have a crystal ball that I purchased in Salem, Mass. many years ago. Useless.
I can tell you history...Clayton has been growing like crazy and I have clients that love Clayton. There was one year that Clayton grew 400%.
All my clients that now have kids in Johnston County schools like their schools so definitely check the scores and ask around. The scores are only a small part of the equation.

I know a bunch of people that commute from Smithfield to Downtown Raleigh, fwiw. I probably wouldn't but whatever floats your boat.
I had a similar decision and went with Riverwood in Clayton. So far, I am very pleased
as reality has meet and exceeded expectations.
I was sold on the convenience:schools, grocery store, shops, restaurants, gym are all within walking distance.
Another perk for nature/fitness folks is the adjacent mountains-to-sea trail that has over 30 paved miles (ending in Wake Forest).
As for the direction of Clayton, if current demographic and economic trajectories continue, this area is positioned for great future.
Property moves very quickly here so even if you discovered it wasn't a fit, moving on should be relatively easy.
Feel free to pm if you have a specific Riverwood questions (especially schools).
