As far as Chapel Hill goes, from a financial standpoint (or otherwise ), it wouldn't be my first choice to retire. The property taxes are higher than most other places in the area, and a huge chunk of that goes to schools. If you don't have kids in school, it would make little sense to live in town. I do have kids in school, and I still think it makes little sense, but that's another thread. In my opinion, there are better options in the Triangle area for retirees.
Good luck!
Thanks. We were looking at Chatham County (Briar Chapel) or Pittsboro (Chatham Park) vs Chapel Hill proper. I'd be curious about your picks for retirees. The bus in Chapel Hill is a big draw.
You might also want to look at Hillsborough and the Orange County section of Mebane. I know the bus goes out to DTCC Hillsborough Campus (also the Hillsborough Hospital is across the street from DTCC). Maybe the bus goes to Mebane, but not sure.
The bus service between CH and Hillsborough is designed for commuting and only runs during AM/PM rush hours, Monday - Friday. There is no service between Mebane and CH.
