The N&O reports that the City of Raleigh is not renewing its contract with the operator of the 25 red-light cameras.

Long overdue. No one paid these anyways because they weren't enforceable.

I've been traveling to the Cary, NC area for decades and they always had those and the town got rid of them. Was wondering when the surrounding areas would also get rid of them due to lawsuits.

I've lost count of the number of times sitting at an intersection and the light turns green when a car comes streaking across the intersection through a solid red light: literally fractions of second between serious injury/death.

Cameras, if fairly managed and not used as revenue generators, seem like a small price of inconvenience to save lives by discouraging lawbreakers.

They do nothing to increase safety. Its just another way of greasing some politicians pockets while that revenue flows out of your state to somewhere like California. At scale, they are a net harm to your community. Several of these companies are my customers.

Didn't Cary dump them because some "important" person got caught at a light with his mistress? He sued the town and won or so I am told.

If fairly managed is the operative phrase. Not much is these days.

A corporation should not be allowed to enforce a fine on the citizens. It's simply not Constitutional and they should all be removed.

Can you just imagine someone being smart enough to achieve "important" status, yet being too dumb to realize that suing the city over a photograph on a red light camera would draw FAR more attention to the fact they had a mistress than just quietly paying the ticket would?

I just wish folks would think through their unsubstantiated rumors a bit more carefully before spreading them.
