We are considering replacing all the windows in our 20-year old home in Cary. We currently have single pane glass and wood frames; the air seeping in/out is just amazing!
I would like to hear from the CityData crew on who they would recommend for the job. Also, any thoughts on replacing with wood vs. vinyl windows?
We recently had a whole bank of windows replaced by Stock Building Supply (Raleigh, but I live in Durham). I've also used them to replace a set of french doors. Not cheap, but reasonable, fantastic product/materials, and impeccable work. I really didn't like the sales guy that I worked with on the windows, but the installation team was the same set of guys for both jobs and I just love them. Of note, we didn't just do "replacement windows," per se, but rather replaced the entire unit--frame, trim, and all. I assume they do just replacement inserts too, but our wood frames were rotten, so the whole thing needed to come out. We replaced with wood.
Procfreq - great idea, we don't live too far from the Stock in Cary, and I've heard other good things about them. They'll definitely be on my list to get a quote.
You might first consider determining if it's necessary to replace the entire window. If the framing lumber inside the wall is still sound, you may be able to replace the window sashes only with “inserts”. They should cost much less than replacing the entire window unit and you won't have to endure large holes in the wall as a result of the old windows being removed, not to mention the mess that comes with deconstruction work. Your choice though.

Thanks, rwally, that's great information. I have no idea about the framing lumber's condition - and indeed, if it's in the wall I suppose that we're going to have to remove one to see it? We just know that our windows are very drafty, and we know that our heating and cooling bills are higher because of it.
Any thoughts on a local vendor to contact for estimates?
We had our whole house replaced and used Champion - they also did a great job.
