Hi,
I will be visiting nc next week and I am looking for some older neighborhoods, that have homes with charm, maybe some history behind them. Any suggestions?
thanks.

Mordecai , Oakdale , Boylan Heights , Glenwood/Brooklyn ... areas surrounding downtown. These are all in Raleigh. There are threads about these areas, so just do a search (there's a link at the top) for these neighborhoods.

Or even better, here is a link to a thread with a neighborhood map:

Enjoy your visit.

beth323,

Looking at your earlier post saying that you want to be under $200,000...

"Any how, we really aren't sure how the housing market is right now in the Cary, Raleigh, Durham area. We want something around 2000-2200 sqft with a nice yard. We want to go smaller and greener (cheaper). 150k-200k. Does anyone know if there are nice neighborhoods in this price range with good schools?"

Since your husband is in construction, are you open to getting involved in extensive rehabilitation of an older home?
That is what will be required at your price point to get you into the neighborhoods mentioned in replies so far.

If you are open to a '50's, '60's or '70's home, on .25-.5 acre, you will often find something in several areas of Raleigh, Cary, Durham, with mature trees and nice yards.
Generally, you should consider the likelihood that you will do some work on the house, however.

Look in Brentwood, a subdivision 5 miles from downtown Raleigh. To see the types of houses you can get, look at the "Discover Brentwood" slide presentation on Brentwood's neighborhood web site. (Google "Beautiful Brentwood" to find it.) The houses in the presentation are NOT for sale, they just illustrate the TYPES of homes the area has.

Houses are under 200K, and you can get great square footage and big yards.

Though I've left the neighborhood, Burch Avenue is definitely a good place to look into. As well as Cleveland-Holloway, Old North Durham. You can look for a bunch in Preservation Durham's website.
