If you drive to Clayton you will be going against traffic. I used to drive from N. Hills to downtown Clayton in approx 22 min. That is going 440 to 40 to 70 east.

I think the bypass would cut your commute down heading to Smithfield.

Clayton is getting a lot more activities over the past few years, I'd definitely consider living there esp. giving gas prices.

Knowing Clayton as I do, there is no reason NOT to live there if you are working there.

I have friends and clients that love the area and you do get more house and more land than in North Raleigh or Cary or Wake Forest.

You should check it out and make your own decision but from a personal view...I'd vote for Clayton!

Given that you've already received lots of advice to think about renting and/or buying in Clayton...

To answer your original question - If you're looking at private schools, you'll probably want to pick one first and live near there. If you decide to live in N. Raleigh and end up sending your kids to a private school in Cary, you're going to be hating the N.Raleigh-Cary commute far more than any drive to Clayton!!

Thanks everybody for the great advice. I'll be visiting next week so will definitely explore Clayton. It is almost now seeming like a no-brainer to live in Clayton.

Are there certain elementary school districts in Clayton that stand out from the rest? This info would be very helpful in narrowing down where to look.

Check out Riverwood in Clayton. Great elementary school and it and the middle school are right at the entrance to the neighborhood.
