Hello....I am currently a high school teacher working in Boston considering a move to the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area with my new wife...though surprising, teachers are paid very well in Boston, but I am concerned about making enough money to live a comfortable life where I do not have to work another job and either my wife (also a teacher) or myself can stay home with the kids when we have some.

We have alot of savings and own a home now that we could sell in order to afford a home in the 200K-275K range and still only pay about a $1,000-$1,200 mortgage-though I'm not sure on average heat/ hot water, insurance/ electric bills (we want to live in Raleigh/ Durham/ Chapel Hill based on a recent visit) Would anyone be able to give me some information about teacher salaries in the area...I've done research and have researched the possible pay increase for teachers in the coming years (is this going to happpen and what really are the specifics?)

I've read about bonuses and other supplementals besides the salary...is this common, etc? How much is it usuallly and what is it for? I'm assuming it's also pretty easy to find and secure a teaching job as well (we both are certified with Masters Degrees)...any information would be greatly appeciated...even recommended neighborhoods to live in or good schools...thanks everyone-I love reading the posts. Take care.

Default Teaching Positions

I am wanting to move to the Raleigh area. I have sent my resume to at least 30 schools. As of today, I haven't heard from any of them. I have 20+ years teaching experience. I thought Wake County was in need of teachers?

I also sent my resume to every high school and middle school in the Raleigh area with no luck or a single phone call. I was surprised since I had heard there was a shortage of teachers and new schools opening in the area. Don't feel like you were personally rejected because I experienced the same lack of response!!!

Wake county has Job Fairs where most teachers are picked in that process. They have a job fair review., principal review, peer review, and then a group meeting before any single person is hired. The pay starts at 28K which is no where near what you need to make to live here. Most teachers here have a second job. Good Luck!
