Does anyone have pictures of the mulch vs the wood chips offered at the City of Raleigh yard waste center (http://www.raleigh-nc.org/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_202_0_43/http%3B/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/category/Resident/Garbage_and_Recycling/Yard_Waste/Cat-1C3CT-20041202-083401-Mulch_and_Compost_For_Sa.html - broken link)?
I just bought a house, and none of the shrubbery surrounding the house even has a bed -- the bushes are surrounded by grass, which looks a little silly. So I'm trying to figure out what to put down that'll look a little nicer.
It says the wood chips come from pallets -- is this going to be treated wood that will have "bad chemicals" in it? Or things like nails all mixed in?
On the other hand, it sounds like their "mulch", which includes grass and leaf clippings, probably won't look the greatest.
If anyone has experience or suggestions with any of this, please let me know! Also, my house is in RTP, so if it happens that there's a similar or better service in Durham or Chapel Hill, either of those would probably work too -- I searched around a bit, but couldn't find the info I was after.
Even comments about the different materials without pictures would be useful :-)
The woodchips are clean and mostly a pale color, it looks close to the shredded pine mulch you would buy at Lowes or Home Depot. The mulch is a darker color and is closer to compost in consistancy. The city of Raleigh seems to use the mulch in the medians where they have plants (Creedmoor road and Raleigh Blvd for sure).
This is the best picture I have of the woodchips, after a good rain it looks lighter in color than this:
