I can't this...thanks for ruining my day....it's never too late to explain ones self. Because I am not racist, I didn't realize that what I was saying appeared to be so. I thought nothing of it. I didn't mean to offend anyone.
There's also a reason the Chinese immigrants live together in certain areas, Irish immigrants live together in certain areas, etc. etc. We like to be with our own kind. That's not racist that's just human nature!!!
Cfisch - I don't know you, so I can only take your word that you didn't mean it. I'm not anyone except a young 31 /yo middle-class african-american woman and I take you at word. I do feel that the statement did show your racial preference, but hey - everyone is entitled to what they prefer. I won't take your head off for it especially since you did apologize for offending some.
I do realize that in this day and age, white people do live near blacks in middle-class and upper middle class neighborhoods. I don't know what your experience has been, but I have lived around nice communities with mixed racial profiles and have had great experiences.
I am moving to NC next week (Wake County) and I hope that my neighbors don't look at me as the "black" girl moving in.
I opened this post because I was interested in the response as well - if someone could help with information on costs of gas, groceries, best stores, etc. that would be great ;-)
Don't let it get to you. Sometimes people react strongly to written words when they can't hear a person's tone of voice. I had the same experience when I first started posting here.
I moved here from NH so if you'd like to send me a DM, feel free. You may want to consider the Wake Forest area, or the North/Northwest area of Raleigh. Cary, Apex, Clayton, Holly Springs. They all have nice areas that you'll like. The diversity here will be far different from NH. The best thing to do is to drive around to different potential locations and see if you like them.
I rented a place sight unseen when I moved here simply by trusting a realtor who had the courtesy to tell me it was a "great area." It was off of Creedmoor Rd., near Strickland Rd., in North Raleigh. Fabulous area.
best,
toodie
carmenah and toodi...thank you so much for these responses. I feel so much better now. I was practically in tears..I am a very emotional person. Thanks again...I am happy to hear that not everyone feels that way about me.
Thanks for that response. I work from home and I'm an independent contractor so my job is not the issue at all. I would like a predominately white town that's middle class. I am not racist at all, but hear that some of the african american communities there are not very nice?? I'm assuming that might not be true. We are looking for a woodsy area as we enjoy hiking, biking, and especially 4-wheeling.
You might want to try Granville county. Things are more country out there, but still close to Raleigh.
The South in general, and North Carolina in particular, has a higher percentage of Blacks than the north. The US is 12.8% Black per the U.S. Census Bureau; NC is 21.7% Black.
Whether you like to think of yourself as racist or not, generalizing against an entire population of people based on the color of their skin, because someone in your family found some people of that color to not be nice is racism.
My advice to you is not simply to change your words. Rather, look within yourself and understand the views and prejudices that cause you to express yourself that way. Few of us are completely immune from it, and all of us need to honestly challenge ourselves to become better.
Good luck.
