Just spend a weekend removing it yourself. There are two options - a steamer ($50 at home depot) or DIF wallpaper removal spray ($4 or $5 a bottle). It can be a pain in the ass if it's old wallpaper, but if it's more modern stuff it will peel right off with minimal effort. I recommend the steamer over the DIF, but sometimes DIF is needed. Also get a Paper Tiger to score the wallpaper, and a wallpaper scraper to scrape it off. You can do 2 rooms in a day, between two people you could probably finish 5 rooms in a weekend. Get some joint compound to smooth over any imperfections in the drywall after the wallpaper has been removed. Then sand, prime with KILZ, and paint. Time spent... a couple of weekends.
If you hire a contractor this will easily cost $2,000 or more!
I reccommended the steamer because I tried to remove 40 year old wallpaper once and tore op the drywall. Had to have my neighbor drywaller come skimcoat it for me. Des is right. The newer stuff lifts right off, but the old stuff is a pain. Some folks paint right over it and you would never know.
