I went through a few threads on the same subject but I didn't get an exact idea of what I was looking for.
My situation is, I may have to move to Raleigh and my company is located in Research Triangle Park. Since I am moving from Singapore, public transportation in US is one of my major concerns. From what I have heard and known everybody ought to own a car to commute from and to work. And the fact of matter is, I do not know how to drive (I never felt the need).
So my apartment hunt has a very strict limitation of commuting. I would prefer an apartment that is either at a walking distance from work (walking for 20-25 mins or 2-3 miles is not a big deal) or has a public transportation facility. On the websites suggested here in other threads there doesn't seem to be an apartment that's within a walking distance. Any of you guys have any suggestions on how should I go about searching for the apartment.
Thanks goodness that I have a bit of time at my disposal to do this research.
One of the challenges is that Research Triangle Park is a very large commercial/business park with no residential complexes. Thus, you can't find an apartment in RTP, and even right around RTP-proper it's still mostly a commercial business area.
I would suggest checking out the routes for the various bus sysems nearby - CATA, Triangle Transit, DATA - to get a sense of which routes would provide easy access to RTP , and then search for apartment complexes nearby.
Longer term, if you're going to live here a while, you really should learn to drive and get a car. This is an area that is hard to get around in without one.
Also, many people bike to RTP. Depending on where in RTP you are working I would concentrate on that and how easy it is to bike to work. As well as the bus route too of course. What is your work address and maybe someone with experience with using their bike and bus can chime in.
Good to know that there is a public transportation system, at first glance it seems a bit limited though. And none of the schedules are tabular, they make you select destination and source from a drop down before you can proceed further. Or is there a plain tabular form I'm unable to find?
Combination of bus and Biking sounds good. I would be working at Development Dr, Morrisville, NC 27560. Hope somebody working there can chime in.
I sure plan to learn driving, if and when I get there.
I remember having a co-worker who had two roommates and they all worked in RTP, and one of them had a car. They arranged for him to be their morning and evening "taxi."
Maybe you can find some arrangement like that. (He no longer works in RTP due to the recession.)
If you can't do that, you should definitely get a bike (with helmet and lock). Don't walk. RTP is not designed for walking.
@justcheck. I did not see the apartments on the websites you posted. But the others I liked at were at least 5 to 6 miles from Development. I will pm you the website as I don't think the moderators like us posting websites.
I work on Development Drive also. I know that there is a bus that runs by Cisco, Ericsson, and Sony Ericsson as I see it in the morning (7:15 or so) when I get to the office (see link below. . . . it's probably bus #49). If you go south on Davis, the first apartment that you reach is Bexley Park. If you go north, I think that Southern Oaks at Davis Park is an apartment complex. If you go west Chancery Village at the Park is pretty close too.
Apartment guide dot com has some pics of the model at Chancery Village. The asst mgr took very good care of us.
