I just got this email from AA.

The Transportation Security Administration has notified American Airlines that departing customers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) may have to wait longer than usual to clear the TSA checkpoint.

As a result, American strongly encourages all customers to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to departure for domestic travel and three hours prior for international travel. You can view estimated checkpoint wait times on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

Are there really long TSA lines at RDU? I have TSA precheck and normally just sail through. My flight is at 7:00 AM on Friday morning. This is my first time flying since February 2020, what time should I be there?

Fwiw - the TSA app is showing less than 15 minutes for normal TSA transit and 5 minutes for precheck on Friday mornings. None of the data points appear to be in the two hour range.
So the data they publish doesn’t match what the letter indicates.
Go figure …
Frank

It’s never taken me more than 5 minutes going through precheck at either terminals. Shouldn’t be a problem unless you need service at the airline counter.

I've never experienced this at RDU, but I have at other airports ... has anyone ever gone through security when the PreCheck lines were closed and everyone routed through the regular lines?

Terrible. Used to happen at DIA routinely when they were doing remodeling. The good thing the local Denverites knew that you could go to the bridge and the line there would be shorter. But, after a while I think everyone figured it out and the line was so long everywhere. Still not sure what was the point of shutting down the PreCheck lines, one would think it would make things more efficient, but maybe they didn't have enough staff to deal with two separate lines.

At RDU it's never a problem. Especially if you fly Southwest. I sometime just go through the regular line, if both are empty. TSA Pre-Check is still worth it when you are coming back from other airports though.

My hunch is that it is boilerplate language sent out to any traveler, regardless of airport, but I could be wrong.

I've never had a wait for precheck at RDU.

When I went through PreCheck at Las Vegas last month, they had a PreCheck line to check your ID/ticket, then funneled you back into the regular security line with a tag that you were a TSA Precheck person. My bag then got flagged because I didn't take my laptop and liquids out and I got yelled at for not doing so and had to wait for them to go through my bag........absolutely terrible

I went out of RDU a week ago and arrived at 6am for a 7am flight and have Pre-check. I didn’t even wait in line for the check. I’ve gone out 5 times at RDU and haven’t had a line yet in Precheck.

The place I waited in line was the bag check (Frontier was particularly awful on this.)

At DCA last year in May, there was no precheck available and everyone had to go through the regular lines. I barely made the flight in time.
