Greetings! My wife, a couple of friends of ours and myself are visiting the Raleigh area in July and will be scouting some towns to consider for future relocation. We have been looking at Morrisville, Pittsboro, Knightdale, Wake Forest, Apex and Cary to name a few. We are from NYC and are more than ready to retire from the rat race. Any comments, positive or negative will be welcome.
What are the tax bases like in these areas?
Are the neighborhoods fairly safe?
How good are the schools as my wife is an elementary teacher?
Of course, employment is certainly an issue now but approach the questions as if it were not...we just would like an overview of the region. Any other observations are welcome too.
Those are all nice & safe areas.
Taxes are about a $1 per thousand give or take depending on the area.
I wouldn't expect your wife to find a job teaching. Lots of budget cuts going on and it's my understanding Wake County Public School System has a hiring freeze in place.
we are from NYC too and came down in July! We fell in love with Wake Forest, N.Raleigh, Rolesville! We are coming back in July and DEFINATELY relocating there. You will LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!
All are nice areas, depending on what you are looking for. I have lived various places. I like Knightdale, it has shopping areas yet a small town feel. Close to Raleigh. I've heard Pittsboro has small town charm, I have yet to visit. Morrisville is close to RTP, so you have a lot of professionals living in that area. It used to be just a farming community, now developers are building. But it doesnt have much shopping yet, but it's close to it. (South Pointe mall in Durham, Brier Creek in Raleigh, and Cary). Apex is also nice! We are considering buying a home there. It is smaller, and about 30 minutes from Raleigh. It has shopping like Knightdale as well. Not a huge fan of Cary. Always crowded and has traffic, and the houses are overpriced in my opinion. (Notice I did say IN MY OPINION!) Don't know much about Wake Forest either way... but I hear its nice. Traffic is bad getting to Raleigh from there, only one way, 401. Ugh.
