Is the traffic situation at McCrimmon and highway 55 still really bad in the mornings? I was looking at the Alexan Panther Creek apartments and found some news articles from Jan/Feb 2009 online that talked about the bad traffic situation from the school and the RTP commuters on 55. If I move there I'd have to turn left onto 55.
I drive 55 from High House to just past 40 every day. I can't say I pay a whole lot of attention to the side roads, but I do know that Good Hope Church Road looks pretty backed up every morning. Rte 55 is a strange commute - the lights are timed really poorly, especially in Durham. Your light turns green and the next one a block up turns red - very annoying. My commute varies from 20-30 minutes for 14 miles total, and the slowdowns seem very random. I'll pay attention to McCrimmon tomorrow morning and let you know if I see anything noteworthy!
Take a backroad further north until you can access 55 via a stoplight. That's what my hubby does from our apartment just off of O'Kelly Chapel Rd. He doesn't dare try to turn left onto 55 from there.
The area is pretty busy right before school starts (about 7:10 am) and right when school is letting out (2:25 pm). Otherwise it is fairly quiet. If you don't plan to be in your car at that intersection at those times too often it probably won't be too much of an issue.
