Good for you! In general, people in today's society avoid doing or using things that appear to take more personal effort.
Both of my kids wore cloth for the entire time they were in diapers. Yess, it required a little bit more work on my part. After a while, it was just part of the routine and seemed a regular part of life. Both of my kids potty trained early, too. (son was 21 months old and daughter was 18 months old) Added benefit of cloth diapers is that the child can feel when they are wet or messy and we change them more often. They equate bodily functions with cleaning up much better than with disposables. So - not only are you doing something for the environment, but you are most likely shortening your time with any sort of diapers.
I agree that you may want to try out different kinds before you buy a lot of them. I preferred using the pre-folded variety for my son and felt ones for my daughter.
I also rinsed all of the diapers first, and washed them along with white laundry. (we use more gentle detergent as a family due to allergies, anyway) They do create more laundry, but not that significant. I also rarely put them in the dryer. I bought two laundry racks to dry them since I found them to be better at absorbing when dried that way.

Good luck!

We did use disposables in the hospital and in the first week. It made the transition easier, and I think disposables were easier on her belly button while it healed. Plus, you inevitably get a bunch at showers, might as well use them!

We did buy some Kushies, the kind they sell at Wal-Mart and the Smart Momma store, and were less than pleased with them. The legs aren't really gusseted very well. We got a pack of the newborn size, and they did work pretty well when she was tiny and wasn't peeing or pooing much, but they tended to leak as she got more prolific!

The woman I bought homemade diapers from had never sewn before she attempted to make diapers. Evidently they're really easy. So that's my next project, having had some experience with a sewing machine. We'll see how that goes!

Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions!

Ditto about the Kushies. I was not a fan at all! There's a reason they're the cheapest!
