You can see where each of them are building, and that might give you a good start if you're still trying to find a neighborhood. The thing we really liked about the local custom builders is that they often build in neighborhoods with several other builders (our neighborhood has 11 different builders) - so you're not seeing the same house over and over again on the same street.
Feel free to PM me or my husband (bta) if you want more details on the above builders.
I believe that all of the builders above are Energy Star Builders which means a lot considering the fact that they are willing to have their homes inspected and tested by a third party after insulation has been installed and after the home has been completed.

i have a home from Future Homes and love it....like the poster above said, the small details in the molding are fantastic. the HVAC components are top notch. i pay less in energy/heat in this 4100sf house than i did in my 1200 sf townhouse.
Most of the nicest homes in Sunset Ridge were built by DJF. Exceptional quality and materials.
Most of Kevin's homes are in the $350K to $550K range, primarily because he builds in areas with lower land costs-Holly Springs, Fuquay, and Southeast Cary. He really hasn't built anything bigger than about 3600 SF and most of his plans are 28-2900 SF plus a bonus room, so similar in size to most of the stuff in Highcroft Village or the north sideof Cameron Pond.
I would put the quality of what he does up there with any of the other listed builders, but the thing he excels at (IMO) is tweaking floorplans for maximum liveability. There are a lot of things about how a home is laid out that can create problems with furniture placement, and sometimes there is space in a home that leaves you scratching your head as to what to do with it. A door, window, or closet in the wrong place can really affect where you put your stuff. How many times have you been in a very nice parade home and thought "what is THIS room for???" or "why is that door THERE?"
We looked at homes for nearly two years, including many homes built by many of the builders on this list. We rejected literally dozens of homes based on what some might see as really small things or not notice at all (mainly because I am a crazy person), and usually there was some sort of issue with the floorplan-one room was bigger than it needed to be and another was too small, a pantry door would bump into another door if both were open-something that would drive me crazy every day. I got really sick of secondary bedrooms that were 11x11 or smaller-that's just too small, and it doesn't have to be that way.
I have never been in any of Kevin's homes where the layout didn't make complete sense and it was absolutely clear as to what to do with the space. When we moved into our home (yes, I'm a customer) and put our furniture in place, everything fit-no beds under a window, no closet doors opening into a nightstand or dresser, outlets and switches where they need to be. This may sound like a small thing to some, and others might take for granted that every custom builder does this stuff the same way, but they don't.
Who are the best custom builders in the $600-$750k range?
What you will need to keep in mind is that most of what people in these parts consider custom builders are really semi custom at best. Most of the custom builders here start with a floorplan of their own and then you can tweak some of it. That is not really custom. Just keep that in mind, if you want a house built from scratch with your own design.
