Has anyone renovated their staircase? We bought a house that has a drywall staircase and would like a traditional staircase. If you have, can you recommend a contractor or share any experiences. We are still debating if we should do this.

The staircase itself can not be made of drywall, so I assume you mean the staircase is built in and surrounded by drywall?

If you are talking about wanting an "open" staircase, that will depend on how your house is constructed and anything built near or under the staircase such as closets, plumbing, AC duct work, etc which may need to be relocated or removed along with any required structural changes needed to support the new staircase.

They may just mean that the handrail area is drywall instead of open railing. In that case, it wouldn't be a really big deal, any handyman should be able to do it.

My mistake, yes it's covered by drywall. If the plumbing needs to be redone then we will pass on the project. I just don't like these closed staircases. It erks me.
