Thanks for the reminder, misterbrown--I grew up here and that sound is the truest "sound of summer" there is, but I had forgotten they were katydids, and I, too, called them cicadas. I can go sit outside and feel like it's back in the 70s, when my neighbor buddies and I would walk around the neighborhood just after dark, just wandering...back in one of those near-North Raleigh 'hoods with lots of sidewalks.
I just saw another one earlier in the evening on the front porch. It seemed a bit confused, so I pick it up and placed it in one of our gardening pots. Bulky little bugger, too. As I was checking it out while hanging out on a leaf I place it on, I was thinking how beautiful this Katydid looked. I should have taken another photo, but the hind area making up the bulk of the Katydid looked exactly like a leaf. Just incredible (at the same time, a praying mantis popped up nearby on another plant... another incredible insect).
This is my first weekend living in Raleigh, in the Glenwood neighborhood. Lots and lots of trees amongst the old homes. I was astounded by the sound that first night!
Even though the trees and sounds are foreign to this Cali native, it said "Summer!" to me.
I was able to show DH what we've been hearing at night ;-)
