Hi,

I and my husband will come to Chapel Hill this August. I am going to start phd program in UNC. Can you recommend affordable places to live? We have a limited budget. We plan to rent a place but we don't know where. Is Chapel Hill a very small and boring place to live? I have never been there before so I have no idea about it. Is it possible to commute to Chapel Hill every day from Raleigh? Please help me I am really confused

thanks

While people do commute to UNC from Raleigh for grad school, it stinks. On top of your commute, you'll likely need to stop at a park and ride and take the bus into campus, as parking on campus is pretty non-existent for grad students (particularly ones on a budget). Much easier to live within walking distance of a direct bus line into campus. Carrboro would be the ideal place to live. If proximity to a highway is important for your spouse, there's some decent, cheap apartments (at least 4 years ago they were cheap and decent) up near the timberlyne shopping area.

Chapel Hill certainly isn't a boring place to live. It is very much centered around the university, though. As a result, a lot of things around town may or may not be your cup of tea.
